In response to school closures, Food4Kids programs in Hamilton, Halton, Mississauga, Guelph and Niagara will be mailing grocery gift cards to children involved with our program to ensure they have access to food for as long as needed. We are committed to ensuring that no child in our community will go hungry.
OUR BIG WHY
A 10-year-old boy waited outside the locked doors of a church breakfast program. The program was to start at 8:15 and the child stood outside at 7:15 in the dark, in the cold and alone. He explained he had not had any food on the weekend and was hungry.
Could he please have some food?
This child was the inspiration to launch Food4Kids, an organization dedicated to fighting child hunger in Ontario. Food4Kids provides healthy food for kids with limited or no access to food each weekend, and during the holidays (where we can). Packages of healthy food are prepared by volunteers and delivered to schools weekly and homes during the holidays to ensure children do not go hungry.
We wish we could say this was an isolated occurrence. However, thousands of children in Ontario are struggling through weekends and holidays without food. We are able to feed some of those children but many more are having to wait until we have the resources to help them too.
Help Fight Child Hunger
In Our Province
Food4Kids started in Hamilton in 2012 when Founder, Lena Bassford, met the child mentioned above one cold wintry morning. Although there were a number of school nutrition programs feeding kids during the day at school, there was a clear gap where kids living in deep poverty were going hungry on the weekends. Lena and a team of dedicated volunteers developed the Food4Kids program and grew it into a major success in Hamilton and Halton. Soon, other communities were noticing Food4Kids and its impact and other passionate individuals started Food4Kids in their areas too.
There are 5 affiliated chapters providing healthy weekend food for 2,625 children each and every weekend. While we cannot eliminate poverty and hunger, we can ensure our community's most disadvantaged children, have access to food, critical to their physical, emotional and academic development.
