Make a Difference
Food4Kids provides healthy food for kids with limited or no access to food weekends or during the summer months.
Packages of healthy foods are prepared by volunteers and delivered to schools weekly and directly to their homes during the summer months.
Affiliated chapters in Hamilton, Halton, Mississauga, Guelph and Niagara prepare and distribute food to 2,840 children through 184 local schools.
Children live with many concerns... worrying about where their next meal will come from should not be not of them.
Make a difference. Support Food4Kids.
OUR BIG WHY
A 10-year-old boy waited outside the locked doors of a church breakfast program. The program was to start at 8:15 and the child stood outside at 7:15 in the dark, in the cold and alone. He explained he had not had any food on the weekend and was hungry.
Could he please have some food?
This child was the inspiration to launch Food4Kids, an organization dedicated to fighting child hunger in Ontario.
We wish we could say this was an isolated occurrence. However, thousands of children in Ontario are struggling weekends and holidays without food. We are able to feed some of those children but many more are having to wait until we have the resources to help them too.
It’s hard to believe children in our very own community go hungry, but it's a reality faced by children each and every day. It’s not that parents do not want to feed their kids….they can’t. The worsening economy, job loss, working poor, illness, mental health, marriage breakdown or those fleeing their home country to seek safe refuge in Canada, are some of the reasons a parent will turn to Food4Kids for support,
Each week, Food4kids distributes healthy food packages to 2,900 children in Hamilton, Halton, Mississauga, Niagara and Guelph each week, 52 weeks a year..
Help Fight Child Hunger
In Our Province
Food4Kids started in Hamilton in 2012 when Founder, Lena Bassford, met the child mentioned above one cold wintry morning. School nutrition programs feed kids during the school day, but there was a clear gap where kids living in deep poverty were going hungry on the weekends. Lena and a team of dedicated volunteers developed the Food4Kids program and grew it into a major success in Hamilton and Halton. Soon, other communities were noticing Food4Kids and its impact and other passionate individuals started Food4Kids in their areas too.
There are now 5 affiliated chapters providing healthy food for 2,900 children each and every weekend. Food4Kids also launched a Summers Without Hunger program, where volunteers hand deliver food directly to the homes of our kids, all summer long.
While we cannot eliminate poverty and hunger, we can ensure our community's most disadvantaged children, have access to food, critical to their physical, emotional and academic development.
